Red List update for Sulawesi snails

All of Sulawesi's endemic freshwater snails are now on the IUCN Red List, with 39 of them listed as Critically Endangered. This happened after recent publication of evaluations for several dozen species for which the IUCN Red List did not yet contain any information.

In November 2025, an international group of about 40 experts met in Bogor, Indonesia, and over the course of a few days, they completed an assessment of 192 mollusc species from the Sundaland region (which includes western Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei). A significant portion of the species that the workshop focused on were Sulawesi gastropods. Our experts Thomas von Rintelen and Muhammad Iqram were also among the assessors – congratulations on the work done!

We have projected the updated data into our list of all endemic snail species from Sulawesi.

Explanations for the conservation status according to the IUCN Red List:CR = Critically Endangered, EN = Endangered, VU = Vulnerable, NT = Near Threatened, LC = Least Concern, DD = Data Deficient, – = not yet evaluated.

Current figures for Sulawesi in 2026:

  • A total of 82 endemic species of freshwater snails have been described.
  • Of these, 2 species are not threatened; we have insufficient data for 6 species; 10 species are near threatened… and the rest? In varying degrees of threat, 39 species in the highest!

That is also why we consider our conservation breeding program for snails from Sulawesi to be important. Do you have an aquarium and a serious interest? You can personally get involved in the protection of endangered species!
